The Role of Tribal Women in Eco-cultural and Social Sustainability

The ecological problem is integrally related to human life. Among human communities the tribal/indigenous people live still very close to nature. The livelihood and cultural practices of tribals deeply depends on natural resources-environment the land, water, forest, livestock etc. of which the tribal community is some how preserving and sustaining from the ages through their life practices. Among tribal communities, women play an integral and important role in environmental, economic and socio-cultural sustainability.

The present paper deals with the same mentioned subject in tribal context of India, especially with tribal communities like Oraon, Munda, Ho, Santhal, Kharias, Bedia, Sardar. It also deals with lesser-known tribes and tribes whose survival is in danger like Asur, Birhor and Sabar of the central belt of India. The paper will highlight case studies of tribal women’s role in social/economical sustainability.
